Nine National Finalists, selected from over 2,000 singers heard in district and regional auditions over the past eight months, compete for up to five National Winners Awards of $15,000 each. They are soprano Carolyn Betty, tenor Philippe Castagner, baritone Levi Hernandez, tenor Simon O'Neill, mezzo-soprano Ann McMahon Quintero, soprano Twyla Robinson, tenor James Valenti, baritone Mark Whatley, and mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wór. Each National Finalist sings two arias, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra conducted by Julius Rudel. The concert was taped on April 21.
The Metropolitan Opera has ended its broadcast season.
